Mission

Our mission is to educate Portland youth in media arts and digital technologies for use in self-expression, creativity, leadership, communication, and social change.

Program

Through Portland Youth Media, youth can learn real life skills such as team building, problem-solving, critical thinking and communication. Furthermore, youth learn these skills, utilizing professional multimedia equipment such as cameras, laptops, lighting, and software such as editing, adobe and basic Microsoft platforms.

The expanded program also includes; an opportunity for youth participants to experience working in a real live television studio located at PCM! Essentially, youth will learn the basics of digital media with a goal to develop programming for PCM's Comcast Cable Channel POP29 (Pulse of Portland), which can also be seen on the PCM website.

Hands-on training will include:

  • Pre-production such as script writing, copy editing, storyboarding
  • In studio and field camera angles, framing and composition
  • Recording and laying audio for video programs
  • Digital editing and digital storytelling, utilizing the latest in Final Cut Pro

Additionally, PYM’s career development and job readiness training program. Once students have completed the introductory program, the instructor will identify those youth interested in pursuing multimedia as a career and part-time employment. Youth selected will have a chance to enter the PYM career and job ready track, usually as soon as the next term, or when space is available, which is limited.
